Wadi Rum
Wadi Rum (Valley of the Moon) is located at the far south of Jordan, positioned on a high hill at the western verge of the Arabian Desert. The village of Rum lay above sea level, surrounded by Jordan’s highest spot, Jabal Umm ad Dami and other famous climbs, like the monolithic summit of Jabal Ramm and the pillared significance of Jabal Qatar. Also known as ‘The Valley of the Moon’, this is the place where Prince Faisal Bin Hussein and T.E. Lawrence based their headquarters during the Arab Revolt against the Ottomans in World War I, their exploits intrinsically woven into the history of this amazing area. Wadi Rum is a fairy-tale village due to its gargantuan rock structures, rippled sand dunes, and clear night skies where all the stars are visible. Colored by iron oxide, Wadi Rum is the reddest region of Jordan and the most primitive in terms of landscape. Wadi Rum is a stupendous, timeless place, virtually untouched by humanity and its destructive forces. The weather and winds have carved the imposing skyscrapers, elegantly described by T.E. Lawrence as “vast, echoing and God-like..."
A maze of monolithic rocks capes rises up from the desert floor to heights of 1,750m creating a natural challenge for serious mountaineers. Hikers can enjoy the tranquility of the boundless empty spaces and explore the canyons and water holes to discover 4000-year-old rock drawings and the many other spectacular treasures this vast wilderness holds in store.
Besides breathtaking landscape, Wadi Rum also consists spectacular cultural illustrations. 25,000 petroglyphs (rock carvings), 20,000 inscriptions, and 154 archaeological sites have been found in Wadi Rum, featuring the evolution of human intellect and the early use of the alphabet. The several inscriptions are found in four different scripts, Thamudic, Nabataean, Islamic and Arabic. This proves the extended literacy among the Arabian Peninsula.
